During the last few days of college we have been very hands on. We got an opportunity to do some of the hair for the fantasy makeup classes and help interpret some of our ideas. We are very lucky and thankful for how willing everyone in the college is to allow us to be as hands on as we are. Considering fantasy looks isn’t something that we would really do we have learned a lot about different looks and how to interpret different hairstyles to go with certain looks.
From helping to create the looks we all got turns in taking photos in a room surrounded with ring lights to help and enhance the colours of the makeup and the hairstyles. We would love to have some of the ring lights in college to help and promote some of the colour services that we do in college so we can enhance the depths and tones of the colour and really help the styles done in the hair to stand out more. We were asked to help and participate in the third year creative cutting class to help blow-dry and style the hair. We then went into the barbering class where we got to watch a demonstration of a clean shave which was a good experience for us to see how it was done. As we are coming to a close on our experience here in Glasgow, it is easy to say that we would love to stay here based on all the people that we have met and all the new skills that we have learned. We did not expect to get such a kind welcome from everyone, every morning we are greeted with smiles and people having conversations with us we were always very well looked after and we will miss seeing them all everyday. We have met so many new friends that we are planning to all come back in the next few months for a visit and to hopefully get to explore more of Glasgow’s tourist sites. We couldn’t have asked for a better location on our accommodation it is very central and the train is only a short walking distance away. All the staff here have out of their way to ensure that our stay was comfortable and made as easy as possible. We are especially thankful for the makeup teachers who have thought us so much when we had no experience with fantasy makeup. Each day they would do a demonstration on someone to help and show the topic for the day and then would divide us into groups and let us come up with our own ideas and see how we interpreted the look. They took time to make sure we knew what we were doing and trying to give us as much advice as possible. We were both apprehensive when we were starting the makeup classes but in the end it turned out to be one of our favourite classes everyone was so friendly and patient with showing us different looks and different styles and allowing us to help do the hair for some of the looks. -Megan & Vanessa

This week in college we had a lot of variation in what we were doing. In some classes we were colouring hair and in others we were doing wigs and extensions. We were allowed to put hilites into two clients hair in college which was nice for us to do to get involved in the class and get any feedback from the teacher.
We also participated in the open salon again this week with the second year where we were able to do some blow drys in the open salon and see how they might do things different to how we learn it in college. All of their assessment work is done on a computer where everything can be kept in different files for each subject and each assessment, where as when we do an assessment, ours is a mixture of computer work and written. We were shown the computer system and found that it was a lot easier to understand and to do the assessments on the computer than it is to write everything out. We also got to participate in the beauty class again this week we got to see a variety of creative looks and different hairstyles and outfits to match it all together. It’s very interesting to see how creative they all are and how well the look can come together, we have been given a lot of tips and been shown step by step actions to help and achieve the looks which will help us in doing some of the competition work when we go home. We are hoping to go sightseeing at the weekend to go and explore some of Glasgow’s sights as we haven’t had much of an opportunity to do so yet. Everyone in the college has been very helpful in giving us recommendations on what to go see and where is best to go. -Megan & Vanessa During the past few days the other girls from beauty therapy and I learned a lot more skills, about different treatments and got to demonstrate our knowledge of treatments on and for the students of Lanarkshire college Motherwell. On Tuesday, we sat in on an aromatherapy class/salon where the students performed aromatherapy treatments on clients and each other. I took notes as to how they did things and how they differed to be moves we perform as beauty therapist in gti. In the evening, the girls and I had the opportunity to teach a full class of beauty students from Lanarkshire college about makeup and how to apply it as well as the different types to suit all different types of skin, young and old. We did 3 different looks on students.
The look I did was a makeup look to suit an older/mature woman, Holly did a basic day look for a younger skin and Nikki did an evening look on a younger student in the class also. I believe this gave all of us a confidence boost & put us on the spot as we were asked questions from the students and lectures throughout the demonstrations. I really enjoyed doing this as I had quite a good knowledge of makeup & enjoyed answering the students questions as well as showing the older students how simple and eye catching a look for more mature women can be & that it doesn’t have to be all basic all of the time & I got some really good feedback from the lecture & students on my knowledge of all of this & the look I performed on one of the mature students. On Wednesday we practiced acrylic once again but instead of applying it to the false nail tips we learned how to create forms from the acrylic which is basically creating the nail & nail tip from the acrylic. I found this really interesting the way it turned so quickly from a powder to a strong nail tip. I found doing acrylics challenging at first but as I practiced more and more on one of the other students I began getting more confident in doing them & improving with each time I practiced. Today we had an open salon in the morning & we were given a back neck & shoulder massage from the massage/aromatherapy students which was amazing! It was interesting how much their massage differed to the Swedish massage that we preform back home but I really really enjoyed receiving the treatment & being able to experience it for myself instead of just watching what they do different & taking notes. I believe it is more beneficial to receive a treatment then to watch as if you feel what the therapist is doing you’re going to remember how you felt & what made you feel a certain was as a pose to watching & forgetting what they did exactly. After receiving our treatments, some of the students set up a pop up shop/treatment area in the canteen area for people to receive treatments for a small price. The students showed us their non surgical facelift machine which was completely different to ours & was much more modern. The moves were similar but the items used for it/the machine itself was completely different and much more modern than out machine at home. Another treatment I was not aware of was a lip plumping treatment using electrical impulses and a numbing cream. I hadn’t seen this machine before or was aware that this type of treatment existed. The students showed me how it worked & allowed me to observe them performing the 10min treatment on a client and then offered to try it on me to see how it felt. I found this really interesting as this treatment is not available to us to learn about in gti so I was curious as to how it worked & the benefits of the treatment. I had a really great time in New college Lanarkshire & made some lovey new friends & met some lovely people during my time spent there. We met the head of the beauty sector, Jane to thank her for having us & she surprised us with a little goody bag each full of Scottish goodies for us and a makeup brush to say goodbye which was extremely kind & thoughtful of her. I look forward to going to the other college tomorrow to finish off a wonderful two weeks which I will never forget. I believe this has benefitted me so much & made me more independent and confident & feel so much better about myself & look forward to the future ahead. I cannot wait to bring home & share my knowledge &of life/experiences in Glasgow and the new skills I’ve developed along the way. -Nessa On Sunday we went to Edinburgh for the day to go sightseeing. We went on a bus tour to see the top tourist attractions, museum and the Edinburgh Dungeons. It was a very good experience. We decided this weekend to go on the subway in Glasgow to compare both. So far this week in college we were shown how to style and apply different wigs for fantasy looks. There was a trade fair on in the building and we got to go see all the different products for sale and got to take part, doing a men’s cut. The event was held for charity purposes. Today we got hands on and both of us got to do highlights on one of the students and we were very happy with our results.
-Vanessa The last 3 days were eventful. On Saturday we went to Edinburgh. We went on a bus tour around the city and visited all the different sights and learned about the history. We got free earphones on the bus which allowed us to learn about the history of Edinburgh and the background of all the different locations. On Sunday we went for a meal that the college bought for us and walked around George’s square and discovered more. Today at college we were very hands on. We showed the beauty students our facial routine and they showed us theirs. We also did a full set of lash extensions on each other which is something we’ve never done before and have always wanted to do.
-Holly The last two days we participated in the first and second year classes. We were allowed to help supervise the first years during their up-styling and try help them in any way we could. We were given an opportunity to work on a competition styling head which is something we haven’t used in GTI.
We also got a chance to help out in the open salon and got an insight into how they run their salons. We did notice the layout to their salons were different, they have waiting areas outside of the salon so that they can get a chance to go and greet their client and get comfortable in doing their consultation on someone who they haven’t met before. We were allowed to do a blow-dry on some of the girls also which we really enjoyed being part of the class. At the end of the day we went up to the beauty class who were using latex for special effects it was really interesting how they created different looks and how talented they all were. We are going to Edinburgh tomorrow to go sight seeing and looking at the different tourist attractions that they have. We are hoping to go to the museums and to the castle and the optical illusion. The students and the staff in the college are very helpful and have spent a lot of time giving us a lot of recommendations on what to go see and what it will be like there, so that we would be more comfortable in traveling there. -Megan Today was the last day of our first week in college it was very productive, we done massages on the Glasgow girls to show them how we do it and we got to see how they did it on us too. In the afternoon we did a scrub and mask on each other and noticed they do it a bit differently to us as they apply the mask to the body with a brush and we do it with out hands and they start off appliying to the arms and chest and we start on the legs. We met another new lecturer and another new class they were all lovely and we all really enjoyed today and can’t wait to do it next week.
-Nikki Today we got the bus to college as usual. We first went to the canteen to wait for our first class as we were a little early. We then went to our first class which was an open salon, but because the students had their market day yesterday, they didn’t have a open salon today. We went into a nails class as the other class were doing paper work. The class began with Liz (the teacher) doing a demo on acrylic nails sculpts, and after the demo the students re created the nails on each other while we watched on picking up on tips and different types of methods of doing acrylic nails.
After our first class we went for a short break and after we went into Lee-Ann’s class where we did a Dermalgica facial on each other we were delighted to get to use Dermalgica skincare as it is one of the biggest skincare products and also because we used Dermalgica in year 1 in GTI. We were all happy to use the products again as we all love them. We then went for our lunch and then went to our last class of the day which was a waxing class the first 20 mins of the class was theory which Joanne the teacher went through contraindications and home care for waxing we then done underarm and lip waxing on each other. We all found this very beneficial as we don’t get to do much waxing back at GTI as we did most of our waxing syllabus in year 1. We then got the bus back to the apartments where we made dinner and relaxed for the evening. -Niamh Today we got to participate in the barbering class. When we arrived into the class we were introduced to everyone. We also received a kit today with everything that we would need to help participate in the open salon. We were given doll heads and shown some cuts that we were able to try out. We were asked to go and see a trade show which will be on next Monday held in the college. They will hold a variety of things so we are looking forward to seeing different products and different hair styles and how we can incorporate them into our own work.
After lunch we went into another make up class they were doing abstract makeup today. We thoroughly enjoyed this class because it was something completely different to what we have seen before. The students had to create a complete look of clothes make up and hair, we got a chance to ask the student any questions that we had such as how they found the ideas for their looks. We were allowed to take some photos of the looks today in hope that it will help us put a look together for a competition when we go home. The teacher Roisin kindly took Vanessa and I under her wing and showed us some make up looks to try and let us try them out. -Megan Today was our third day in the college & its safe to say we are finally settled in! Everyone here are so lovely & very interested in how we do things back home in comparison to the way they to things here in the beauty sector. Today they had, what they called a ‘Valentines market’ where the girls and I helped the other beauty therapists set up for a range of different treatments in their canteen area for the small price of £5. As we were the ‘Irish girls’ or the ‘Galway girls’ as they call us here, they did our nails for free & we got talking to people around the college & encouraged them to get some treatments done today.
We also learned how acrylic nails are done which I found really interesting as acrylic nails aren’t as popular as gel nail extensions in Ireland so I had never seen them being done before & they even let us try & do them for ourselves. So far I’ve enjoyed myself & made some new life long friends from other courses in GTI as well as friends from Glasgow itself! Today is one of the girls from hairdressing’s birthday so this evening we are having a surprise party for her & having cake, followed by going to go for a meal to celebrate that & becoming friends as before the Erasmus we did not know each other & since we have met we have all gotten on really well. We have also invited the others who travelled to Glasgow with us to join us for dinner this evening. I look forward to what the rest of the week & a half has to offer. It has really opened my eyes to all of the opportunities the world has to offer & the different ways being preform treatments in beauty therapy & how you can make a treatment your own so simply. -Kendra |
