ERASMUS+ (formerly Leonardo da Vinci) projects are intended to enable students to experience the language and culture of another European country and to do this through work based learning or work experience. Travel and accommodation is funded for three weeks in Finland, which is our selected partner country. Finland comes top of world league tables ranking excellence in education, they have enshrined the right to art and design education for all citizens in their legislation and Finland has a world class reputation in design and innovation. It also has a unique character within Europe culturally as well as in terms of its climate and environment.
Partner institutions in Finland generously help in finding accommodation and work placements for our students and this project wouldn’t happen without this friendly assistance, a big kiitos! to them. In the last five years an increasing number of Finnish students now come to Galway for their ERASMUS+ work placements.
In 2011 the first group from this course travelled to Finland. 12 art students worked in Finnish colleges, museums, art centres etc – their Finnish hosts cannot be thanked enough for making this a brilliant and memorable experience. This blog gives a sense of some of those students’ experiences.
